Warning

The FDA has determined that, despite recent concerns, the injectable antibiotic cefepime (Maxipime) does not pose a greater mortality risk than other β-lactam antibacterials and "remains an appropriate therapy for its approved indications." Following a 2007 meta-analysis in Lancet Infectious Diseases, the FDA undertook its own meta-analysis, which included 50 additional trials, and found no significant difference in 30-day mortality between patients treated with cefepime and those treated with other β-lactams. The agency is continuing its safety review using hospital drug utilization data; the results will not be reported for at least a year.
